Job Introduction
Do you want to train and work as a journalist with one of the world’s largest broadcasting organisations?
We are looking for exceptional people who want to be the BBC’s broadcast journalists of the future.
If you are successful in your application we will train you in online, TV and radio news to a high standard, as well as giving you valuable experience in work placements around the UK. We’ll pay you a salary and you will be mentored by a senior BBC journalist
If you haven’t already done so, take a look at www.bbc.co.uk/careers/trainee-schemes/jts for further information about this year’s Journalism Trainee Scheme. Please ensure that you read all the guidance on completing the application form for this scheme.
Role Responsibility
During your training you will find, research, write and broadcast news stories and programme items: to the required standard and within agreed deadlines. You will write text pieces, voice pieces and bulletins for radio news; prepare and present bulletins for local TV and prepare online and interactive stories.
In addition to interviewing and reporting in both recorded and live situations, you will produce live and recorded items for TV and radio, suggest news stories and programme ideas on a regular basis and operate technical equipment for all media to the required standard. In addition you’ll develop and maintain contacts and respond professionally to enquiries from the public as well as preparing and reporting the news.
At all times you will exercise editorial judgement, maintain professional standards and stick closely to the BBC’s editorial policies
There is some variation in the above, depending on the particular placements you are selected for.
The Ideal Candidate
You have a genuine interest in news and current affairs and/or sport. You regularly read the BBC’s local and national news and sports websites, watch TV news and keep abreast of news on the radio and in social media. You enjoy all sorts of media and are passionately interested in working in TV, radio and online journalism.
You can already demonstrate strong evidence of your own journalism and creativity and have lots of ideas to make original output. You already write quickly, accurately and compellingly under pressure and you have an eye for a striking image and an ear for good audio and arresting pictures. You are aware that strong stories and clear and concise writing are essential elements of TV and radio programmes, and of internet journalism.
You have the potential to report the news fairly, accurately and without bias and be able to bring this to air by perseverance and working well with a wide range of colleagues and contacts.
You relish the challenge of using your own experience to help us reflect the diversity of the UK and serve our audience better. Our journalists need to reflect and understand the audiences we serve – for example, the different geographical regions of the UK, the experience of black and Asian people, socially disadvantaged people and those with disabilities.
You are resilient and have the flexibility to work unsocial hours (including nights and weekends). You are a team player who works well with a wide range of colleagues and members of the public. You are also a self-starter and willing to work on your own initiative when necessary.
